Lee's Chorus Arrange Collection
The collection from UNC Jazz Press
Honeysuckle Rose (7 Brass) Being a good entertainer is the key for this arrangement of a medium-swing jazz standard scored for vocal jazz quartet (SATB) and big band (5-7). Starting with a solo tenor singer accompanied by drums with brushes, a whole band has more role than just playing the right notes - shouting a couple of words! Includes scat solos and an alto sax solo. A great closer!
Aru Ai No Uta (And the Sky is Blue) This original composition performed by the group, Syncopation, is a beautiful ballad in the style of well-known jazz standards such as When I Fall in Love. An optional flugelhorn solo would be very tasteful for the solo section. SATB with rhythm section.
Crescent Moon in Spring This original composition performed by the group, Syncopation, has two well-contrasted sections--fast jazz waltz and a tender ballad. It features improvisation solos by both male and female. SATB with rhythm section.
For All We Know This wonderfull jazz standard features a Bill Evans-like piano part. Very sensitive, and emotional arrangement by Lee with ambitious voicings and intriguing harmony. SATB with piano.
Fotografia (Photograph) Not so much known in the U.S., this song is one of the most astonishing works of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Starting with a harmonically rich ballad, it turns into a samba, followed by a challenging vocal soli section. SATB with piano, but adding the whole rhythm section is possible if the pianist is not too familar with the style of this genre.
America A beautiful pop waltz written by Paul Simon is now reborn as a tasteful arrangement for vocal ensembles. Intriguing reharmonization and great counterpoints add sophisticated colors to the song which truly suit the nature of Paul Simon's lyrics. SATB with rhythm section. Optional Soprano Sax solo.
Bridge Over Troubled Water Very hip reharmonizaton and voicings are not the only facotrs that make this arrangement interesting. Lee has done a wonderful job of taking influences from both Simon and Garfunkel's and Aretha Franklin's arrangements then infusing them into a chart for five voices. SATBB a cappella.
There Is Hope Originally written for Sumatra earthquake and Tsunami in 2004, this original composition of Tsunenori 'Lee' Abe has a strong message for us to keep hope alive. The combination of the strong lead vocalist(s) and the powerful choir makes this composition solid and strong. Lead vocalist(s) with SATB choir and rhythm section.
Silent Night This Take 6-like version of the traditional hymn integrates three different colors beautifully: gospel, swing and ballad. The memorable motif "Silent Night" is uniquely used as layers of counterpoints which makes this arrangement exciting. Written for SATBB a cappella quintet. If your group has high tenors, it's also possible to perform with a male a cappella quintet.
